Amid concerns over the way construction activity is happening in and around city and more particularly in the backdrop of episodes of lack of safe practices resulting in structures facing mishaps, here is a solution coming from the National Academy of Construction.

The Academy which offers regular training in different aspects of building activity and has Quality Control and Testing Laboratory for construction materials and also a team of experts with it is willing to offer its services for private builders in ensuring that construction of their projects inculcate quality as a measure. For a nominal charge, builders can avail of different facilities offered by the NAC and also have the quality aspect in progress of construction monitored on regular basis.

“We have facility to test materials such as soil, sand, metal, bricks, blocks, steel and cement and are in the process of acquiring the required infrastructure to also test others such as tiles,” says Prabhu, NAC Additional Director General.

From foundation soil test to a finished product, it can provide assessment at different levels and for a finished building, it can also take up the NDT i.e., Non Destructive Test.

The NAC has a mobile unit but the same is presently at Polavaram and plans are on to get one more. For government and other institutional facilities, the Academy has been involved in similar role and the projects include the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Irrigation Department and also a building coming up at the Financial District.

“We can provide regular supervision which includes inspection and review of the work progress. Since supervision is provided by experts, deficiencies if any can be spotted this way and it ensures that mistakes do not accumulate till the end,” says Prabhu.

Builders by spending say about 0.5 per cent to 1 per cent of their project this way could ensure safe completion of their projects and ensure better product for the buyers. The NAC is also contemplating training modules for homemakers.

This is being considered in view of the fact that for individual constructions and repairs and renovations, it is they who mostly monitor the work. “The idea is to equip interested homemakers with different aspects that need to be monitored during construction,” adds NAC Deputy Director (Training), Malini Devi.
