Real Estate Employee Arrested for Fraud
Assistant general manager of the city office of a Mumbai-based real estate developer, Unity Reality and Developers Limited, was arrested for allegedly duping his company of Rs 2.02 crore by producing fake mutation certificates. Police said the accused, Mr Ashok Bhattacharya (45), had taken the amount from higher authorities of his company to pay the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for the mutation of two plots on Alipore Judge’s Court Road in May 2008. Instead of paying the amount to the civic body, he prepared three fake certificates and sent them to his head office in Mumbai.
The certificates showed that he had payed Rs 65 lakh, Rs 67 lakh and Rs 50 lakh to the civic body for three certificates. Later, the company enquired with the KMC and detected some anomaly in the matter. To clarify the same, senior officials of the company produced the certificates before the officials of the civic body. Mr Shantanu Samanta, deputy assessor collector (south), detected that the certificates were fake and informed the police.
