Reliance Industries has restarted its domestic fuel sales by re-opening two petrol pumps in Gujarat to sell diesel, a source said here.

“We have just started retailing diesel through our two petrol pumps in Gujarat. We are now focusing on diesel. Some part of diesel, we are diverting into the domestic market,” the source familiar with the development said.

Reliance had a year ago shut its 1,432 petrol pumps as it couldn’t compete with the subsidised rates of PSU retailers. Now, however, with oil prices falling, the margins on auto fuel have turned positive again.

“Its too premature to say by when all petrol pumps will start operations, but we will get back into petro-retail as quickly as possible,” source said.

No joint venture partner is involved in the diesel retailing, the source said.

RIL has surrendered the EOU status for its refinery. The refinery is operating as a non-EOU refinery with effect from April 16 to cater to increasing demand of petroleum products in the country.
